At a glance
Custom metal keychains, custom acrylic keychains, PVC or rubber: which suits your design
A metal keychain is die-cast in zinc alloy, plated, and filled with enamel colours between raised metal lines, so it carries a crisp logo in a few flat colours and has some weight to it. An acrylic keychain is clear plastic cut to your outline and printed, so it carries full-colour artwork. A PVC or rubber keychain is moulded soft, in layers of flat colour, and suits a chunky, rounded version of your mascot. A bottle-opener keychain is metal, with the opener cut into it. Each is cut to the outline of your design, and each carries "Made in China" on the back. A small plush on a clip or ring is quoted as a plush, on the custom plush page.

Keychains as part of a gift shop range
Keychains often hang beside cups, beanies and plush in the same design. The gift shop merchandise guide covers which items are worth making in your own design, what each one carries before it ships, and how to order the range a season ahead.
A plush on a clip or ring
A small plush on a clip or ring is quoted as a plush, with its own steps before it ships. The custom plush page covers it.
Before you ask
The spec sheet we send the factory
These are the fields we ask you for. The factory draws, quotes and makes the keychains to them, so a fuller sheet brings the first quote closer to the real one.
Material
Die-cast metal with enamel for a crisp logo in a few flat colours, printed acrylic for full-colour artwork, soft PVC or rubber for a chunky, rounded shape, or a metal bottle opener.
Artwork and outline
Your logo or mascot file, its colours by Pantone reference, the outline it is cut to, and one side or two. The factory draws it to size, and you check the drawing before the mould is made.
Size and thickness
Big enough to read on a set of keys and small enough to sit in a pocket, and sized to fit its card if it is carded.
Finish and fittings
The plating colour on metal, and a split ring, a clasp or a short chain.
Material of every part
The body, the plating, the enamel or ink, the ring, the chain and the clasp, each named, with the factory's written declaration on what is in its metal, its coatings and its PVC.
Who it is for
Adults by default. A keychain designed for children 12 and under is a children's product and is quoted that way, with a lab report on the production sample.
Marks on the keychain
"Made in China" and where it goes (stamped, engraved or printed on the back), and your name or the season if you want them.
Retail packing
Carded one by one with a peg hole, or bagged, with your barcode, UPC or SKU label from your own system.
Designs and quantities
Each design and colour, how many of each, and whether it is a season edition or a design you keep.
Approvals
The drawing, a pre-production sample if the quote includes one, and who signs off.
Dates and delivery
The day the keychains must be on the peg wall, the delivery address, and whether there is a loading dock.
Whose marks
Written authorisation for every logo on the artwork. A character's, team's or sponsor's mark goes on only with its owner's written approval.
Price
What sets the price of a custom keychain
We do not publish a keychain price. It turns on the material, the size, the colours, the packing and how many you order of each design, so you get a landed cost, line by line.
The material
Die-cast metal with enamel, printed acrylic, soft PVC or rubber, or a metal bottle opener.
Size and thickness
How big the keychain is and how thick, which sets how much metal or plastic goes into each one.
Colours and sides
How many enamel or print colours the artwork carries, and whether it is printed or shaped on one side or both.
Plating and fittings
The plating colour on metal, and the ring, clasp or chain.
Packing
Loose by the carton, bagged, or carded one by one with a barcode for the peg wall.
How many of each design
Each design is set up once, with a mould for metal and PVC, and that setup is spread over every keychain in the run.
Landing at your shop
Ocean freight, the customs entry and delivery to your door, each on its own line of the quote.
Itemised on the quote, hidden in a unit price
- The mould or setup for each new design
- A pre-production sample, if the quote includes one, and any rework before you approve it
- Backing cards, bags and barcode labels, if the keychains go straight onto the peg wall
- For a design meant for children 12 and under, the lab's report on the production sample
- The broker's fees for the customs entry, and delivery from the port
Timing
Work back from your season's first day
We do not publish a production window for keychains. Plan them with the season: the quote in spring, the artwork signed off over the summer, and the keychains shipped with the season's containers. A season edition keeps the shape and changes the artwork, and the quote says whether the mould carries over from your last order.
How the date is set
The date your order has to be placed comes from the day the keychains have to be on your peg wall.
- Tell us the keychains, the quantity and the day they have to be in your shop.
- We work back through the drawing, the mould, the sample if there is one, the run, the cards, the cartons and the crossing, and tell you the date the order has to be placed.
- The landed quote follows, itemised line by line.
What goes wrong
Before the run: the material, the marking and who it is for
Three things go on the spec sheet before anything else. First, the material of every part is named, and the factory puts in writing what is in its metal, its coatings and its PVC. Second, the keychain says "Made in China", on the back where it lasts, or on the card only where your broker confirms the card is enough. Third, who it is for. Keychains are quoted for adults by default. A design for children 12 and under is a children's product and is quoted that way: a production sample goes to a CPSC-accepted lab, the certificate from whoever imports it rests on the lab's report, and tracking marks go on the keychain and its card. As general information, your broker or counsel can confirm what your goods need.
Common failures
- Enamel colours that drift from the Pantone references on the approved proof
- A ring or clasp that opens, or snaps off, in its first weeks on a set of keys
- Plating worn through where the keychain rubs against keys
- Print on the outer face of an acrylic keychain that scratches off
- No "Made in China" on the keychain or its card, found only when the cartons reach the shop
- A cartoon design ordered as a general keychain when its look makes it a children's product
Buyer mistakes
- Fine lines and small lettering in the artwork that the enamel or the print cannot hold at keychain size
- No barcode plan, so the keychains get carded and labelled by hand in the stockroom
- A character's, team's or sponsor's mark on the artwork without its owner's written approval
Inspection checklist
- The run checked against the approved proof or sample: the outline, the colours and the plating
- "Made in China" found on keychains or cards from every carton
- Rings and clasps opened and closed on keychains taken from the run
- Cards and barcodes checked against your shop's instructions
- Carton counts and marks checked, and photos taken before the cartons are sealed

How it gets to you
- Shipped by sea from China in cartons, on their own or in one shipment with the rest of your order
- Keychains often travel with other merchandise, or with a light attraction's season of lights
- A customs broker files the entry when the shipment lands
- Delivered from the port to your shop, warehouse or venue, with or without a loading dock
Each step of the landing is priced on your keychains and set out on the quote. How that works Add up a landed cost
What we do on an order like this
- We turn your artwork, your choice of material and the way you sell it into a spec sheet that the factory quotes and works to.
- Before you commit, we ask the factory to name the material of every part and to put in writing what is in its metal, its coatings and its PVC. We also ask where its metal and its PVC come from.
- Your logo goes on only with your written authorisation, and any other mark only with its owner's.
- You approve the proof, and the sample if the quote includes one. We check the run against it before it is packed, import the keychains and deliver them to you.
Questions
Asked before ordering custom keychains
How much do custom keychains cost?
It depends on the material, the size, how many colours the artwork carries, one side or two, the plating and the ring, the packing, how many you order of each design, and the freight and customs entry. We do not publish a keychain price. The quote puts each of those on its own line, and the landed cost calculator on this site adds them up.
Where can I get custom keychains made?
Promotional suppliers print a logo on a stock keychain and ship it soon, which suits an event or a giveaway. A keychain in your own shape, colours and packing is made to order, which suits a shop that plans its season months ahead. We run that second route with factories in China, import the keychains and deliver them to you.
What is the difference between metal, acrylic and PVC keychains?
Custom metal keychains are die-cast in zinc alloy, plated, and filled with enamel colours between raised metal lines. They suit a crisp logo in a few flat colours, and they feel heavy in the hand. Custom acrylic keychains are clear plastic cut to your outline and printed in full colour, so they suit artwork with gradients or fine shading. PVC and rubber keychains are moulded soft, in layers of flat colour, and suit a chunky, rounded shape. Metal and PVC need a mould made for each design; acrylic is cut and printed.
Is a keychain a children's product?
Not usually. A keychain with your logo, sized for a set of keys and sold with the rest of the shop's merchandise, is a general-use product, and that is how we quote it unless you tell us otherwise. A keychain designed for children 12 and under is a children's product in US law. A cartoon or toy-like design, a size made for small hands, or a place on the peg next to the toys can make it one, whatever the label says. We quote that keychain only as a children's product: a production sample goes to a CPSC-accepted lab, the certificate from whoever imports it rests on the lab's report, and tracking marks go on the keychain and its card. Without the report, it does not ship.
What has to be marked on a keychain we sell?
As general information: US rules ask for an imported article to be marked with its country of origin, legibly and permanently. On a keychain that usually means "Made in China" stamped, engraved or printed on the back. Marking only the card is an option where your broker confirms the card is enough. The spec sheet also names the material of every part, and every logo on the artwork needs its owner's written authorisation. Your broker or counsel can confirm what your goods need.
Can a keychain have a bottle opener?
Yes. The opener is cut into the metal body, or a steel insert is set into it, and the spec names the metal of both. Try the sample on a real bottle before you sign it off.
Can you make plush keychains?
Yes, as a plush. A small plush on a clip or ring is quoted as a plush, and the custom plush page covers it, from the pattern to the lab.
When should we order keychains for next season?
Ask for the quote in spring and sign off the artwork over the summer, so the keychains can ship with the season's containers. Tell us the day they have to be on your peg wall, and we work back to the date the order has to be placed.
Can the keychains ship with our other merchandise?
Yes. Keychains can share a shipment with your cups, beanies, plush or other goods, or with a light attraction's season of lights. Each design gets its own carton marks and packing list, so your stockroom can check them in.
