Flame paperwork for the clear cover
A fire marshal can ask about the clear cover of an igloo the way they ask about a tent top. The guide sets out which papers they can ask for, who signs each one, and what changes in California.
Before you ask
What to send a factory for a set of dining domes
Size each dome by the table that goes in it, and decide the rest once for the whole set. These are the choices a factory needs before it can say yes.
The table inside
The table, the chairs and the party each dome must hold. The factory proposes the size from that and confirms it on its drawing.
How many domes
How many in the set, and any spares. Every dome is built the same, so parts swap between them.
Frame
Galvanized steel struts and hubs, and the frame colour. Galvanizing after welding puts zinc on the joints too.
Cover, door and vents
The clear PVC and how thick, any opaque panels, a zip door or a framed one, and how many screened vents.
What they stand on
Concrete, a deck, paving or a rooftop, and whether each dome takes a floor mat. This decides the fixings.
Report, packing and date
The flame test report you want on the cover, how each set is packed and labelled, where they ship and when. The quote works back from that date.
Price
What sets the price of an outdoor igloo
We do not publish a unit price. It depends on the size of each dome, the cover, how many are in the set and where they land, so it comes as a landed cost. Five things move it most.
The size of each dome
A dome for a bigger table takes longer struts, more of them and a larger cover. The factory proposes the size from the table you want inside.
The frame
The tube, the hubs, the galvanizing and the frame colour set most of what the frame costs to make.
The cover, door and vents
The thickness of the clear PVC, any opaque panels, a zip door or a framed one, and how many vents.
How the sets pack
The packing plan for your exact dome decides how many sets fit in a container, and that count spreads the ocean freight across every dome.
Landing in the US
Freight to the port in China, the ocean leg, the customs entry and the broker, and delivery to your venue each go on their own line of the quote.
Itemised on the quote, hidden in a unit price
- Freight from the factory to the port in China
- The customs entry and the broker's fees
- Drayage from the port, and unloading at your end
- Delivery to your venue or your storage unit
Timing
The date is set on your order
We do not publish a production window in this category. It depends on the configuration you ask for, so the date comes with the first reply, and the calendar for your order is built from that date and the ocean transit on your lane.
How the date is set
Every order is configured to your space, so the first reply confirms the configuration and the date.
- Tell us the specification, the quantity and the date you need them.
- We confirm the specification and the production date with the factory.
- The landed quote follows, itemised line by line.
What goes wrong
Fog, fit and what we check before the igloos ship
Common failures
- A cover that fogs up inside on a cold night, because the dome has too few vents or stands on wet ground
- A clear cover cut to a different size from the frame, so it sags or will not close at the door
- Struts and hubs from different domes mixed in one crate, so the set cannot go up without sorting
Buyer mistakes
- Ordering the domes before deciding the table and chairs that go inside
- Leaving the fire marshal's questions until the domes have landed
- Planning the fixing for a lawn when the domes will stand on a rooftop or a deck
Inspection checklist
- One dome of the set put up at the factory, with its cover fitted
- Zinc over the hubs and the strut ends, with no bare steel showing
- The door's zip worked end to end, and every vent opened and closed
- The flame test report matched to the cover material in the order
- Struts, hubs and covers counted against the packing list for each set

How it gets to you
- Shipped by sea from South China, each dome packed as its own numbered set
- Delivered to your venue or a warehouse, unloaded with a forklift or at a dock
- How many sets fit in a container comes from the factory's packing plan for your dome, in writing before you commit
The landing is priced on your exact dome, line by line, on the quote. How that works Add up a landed cost
What we do on an order like this
- We confirm the igloo you describe with the factory, and the date, before you commit.
- We ship welded, hot-dip galvanized steel frames every season, and we have quoted dome igloos before. An igloo's hubs and struts are galvanized after they are cut and welded, so the joints carry zinc too.
- Before you commit, the test paperwork for the clear cover in your order is discussed and agreed with you. If the factory cannot produce a flame test report on that exact cover, we do not go ahead with it.
- Before the sets are packed, we check a dome put up at the factory against the specification you approved, then count every set.
Questions
Asked about outdoor igloos and dining domes
What is an outdoor igloo, and what else is it called?
An outdoor igloo is a small geodesic dome: steel struts in a pattern of triangles under a clear cover, with room for one table. Sellers also call them garden igloos, igloo domes, dining domes and patio igloos, and some say igloo tent or garden dome for the same thing. The steel frame holds it up, so there is no fan or air pump to run.
What is the cover made of?
Clear, flexible PVC, pulled over the frame in one piece, with the door and the vents set into it. How thick the PVC is, and whether some panels are opaque for shade or privacy, are choices on the spec sheet. A clear igloo cover like this folds down for storage between seasons.
How big should each igloo be?
Start with what goes inside: the table, the chairs, and room to walk round them to the door. Tell us that, and the factory proposes the size and confirms it on its drawing before you commit. If you want one large dome for a whole group or an event, that is a different product, and it has its own page.
What will the fire marshal ask for?
Ask your local fire marshal early, before you order. A fire code official may ask for a lab test report on the cover material to NFPA 701, the fire test for fabrics and films, before a permit is granted. The test paperwork for the exact cover in your order is discussed and agreed with you before you commit. If the factory cannot produce a flame test report on it, we do not go ahead, and we tell you why.
Can we heat the igloos?
We quote igloos without heaters. Whether and how to heat a closed dome is a question for your fire marshal and for whoever makes the heater.
Why do igloos fog up inside, and what stops it?
Breath, warm food and wet coats put moisture into the air of a closed dome, and it settles on the cold cover as fog. Vents, and opening the door between seatings, let it out. A dome on a wet lawn fogs more than one on a deck or paving, so the number of vents and what each dome stands on are worth settling in the spec.
How are igloos fixed down on a patio, deck or rooftop?
It depends on the surface, so it is a line on the spec sheet: bolts into a concrete slab, screws into a deck, or weights where nothing may be drilled. On a rooftop, the building's owner decides what may be fixed to the roof, so ask them before you choose.
What do you need from me to quote a set of igloos?
The table and chairs each dome must hold, how many domes, the door, the cover and any opaque panels, how many vents, the frame colour, what the domes stand on, any spare covers or struts, where they ship and the date you need them. The quote form asks for the same things.
How does a container order of igloos work?
The dome is specified once and built the same every time, so parts swap between domes. Each one is packed as its own numbered set. How many sets fit depends on your exact dome, so the factory works out a packing plan and you get the count in writing before you commit. Spare covers and struts travel in the same container.
What goes into the landed cost of an outdoor igloo?
The factory price, which turns mostly on the size of the dome, the frame and the cover; freight to the port in China; ocean freight; the customs entry and the broker; and delivery from the port to your venue. The quote puts each on its own line, and the landed cost calculator on this site adds them up.
What do you check before the igloos ship?
One dome of the set goes up at the factory with its cover on. We look at the zinc on the hubs and strut ends, run the door's zip and every vent, match the flame test report to the cover material, and count the struts, hubs and covers in each set against the packing list. You can ask for photographs before the container is sealed.
How do we store winter igloos between seasons?
Clean and dry each cover before it is folded, because a cover packed damp marks and mildews. Bundle the struts by dome with their hubs, and give every dome its own numbered crate or bag, so next winter the set goes up without sorting. Keep a spare cover on the shelf for a tear mid-season.
