At a glance

What a geodesic dome tent is made of

Used for

  • Glamping sites: a row of domes on decks for guests to sleep in
  • Event fleets: an event dome tent that goes up for a launch, a lounge or a festival and comes back
  • A gathering space at a campground or a retreat
  • Brand activations and pop-up rooms at shows and events

Bought by

  • Glamping site and campground owners building out a site
  • Event companies and production fleets
  • Retreats and venues adding a space of their own

Materials

  • A geodesic frame of galvanized steel tube struts, bolted to steel hubs
  • A white PVC cover over the whole frame, opaque or with clear window panels
  • A liner under the cover, if you want one

Options

  • The type of door, and the side it faces
  • Windows: how many, where they sit, and what they are made of
  • A liner, and opaque or part-clear sections of cover
  • Anchors for a timber deck, a concrete slab or the ground

Packaging

  • Each dome packed as its own labelled set: struts bundled by length, hubs boxed, the cover and liner rolled and bagged
  • A parts list for every dome, so a strut or a cover panel can be ordered again by number

Flame paperwork for the cover

A fire code official can ask about the cover of a dome the way they ask about a tent top. The guide sets out which papers they can ask for under each edition of the code, who signs each one, what the label has to say, and how California differs.

Starting a glamping site with domes

Before a glamping site orders its domes, the county, the state and the fire marshal settle what may stand there and how. Their answers decide the base, the size, the door and the paperwork on the order, and the guide takes them one at a time.

How to start a glamping business with domes

Before you ask

The spec sheet we send the factory

Every dome in an order is built to one sheet. These are the fields on it, and the quote form asks for the same ones.

  • Size and frequency

The diameter, and how finely the frame is divided. If you are unsure, tell us what goes inside and the factory proposes both on its drawing.

  • Steel tube and finish

The tube's outside diameter and wall, and hot-dip galvanized or galvanized with a powder coat in your colour.

  • Cover and liner

The PVC's weight and colour, opaque or with clear panels, and whether a liner goes under it.

  • Door and windows

The kind of door and the side it faces; how many windows, where, and what they are made of.

  • Base and anchors

A timber deck, a concrete slab or the ground, and the anchors that suit it.

  • Paperwork, packing and date

The flame test report on the cover and liner, the design loads in writing, how each dome is packed and labelled, where they ship and when. The quote works back from that date.

Price

What sets the price of a glamping dome

We do not publish a price per dome. It turns on the size, the cover, the number of domes and where they land, so the answer is a landed cost, built from the five lines below.

Request a quote

  1. The size of the dome

A wider dome needs longer struts, more of them and a bigger cover. The diameter and the frequency, how many triangles make up the frame, set most of the frame's cost.

  2. Tube and finish

The steel tube's diameter and wall, and whether it is hot-dip galvanized or galvanized with a powder coat in your colour.

  3. Cover and liner

The weight of the PVC, whether it is opaque or has clear panels, and whether a liner goes under it.

  4. Doors and windows

Each door and window is cut and set into the cover, and the kind you choose changes the price.

  5. Landing at your site

Inland freight to the port in China, ocean freight, the customs entry, the broker, and trucking from the port to your site are priced on your exact domes, each on a separate line.

Itemised on the quote, hidden in a unit price

  • Trucking from the factory to the port in China
  • The customs entry and the broker's fees
  • Drayage from the port, and a forklift or a dock to unload the crates
  • The deck or slab each dome stands on, which is built at your end

Timing

The date is set on your order

We do not publish a production window in this category. It depends on the configuration you ask for, so the date comes with the first reply, and the calendar for your order is built from that date and the ocean transit on your lane.

How the date is set

Every order is configured to your space, so the first reply confirms the configuration and the date.

  1. Tell us the specification, the quantity and the date you need them.
  2. We confirm the specification and the production date with the factory.
  3. The landed quote follows, itemised line by line.

How the order-by calendar works

What goes wrong

Flame test reports, permits and what we check before shipping

Common failures

  • Windows that cloud or crack after a season, because the window material was never named in the order
  • An assembly manual and parts list written for a different dome, so the crew has to guess
  • Parts from several domes mixed in one crate, so a door ends up on the wrong dome

Buyer mistakes

  • Ordering before asking the county and the fire marshal what they need to see
  • Building the deck before the factory's drawing has confirmed the dome's footprint
  • Taking a listing's word on fire safety without a flame test report for the actual cover

Inspection checklist

  • The tube and the zinc checked against the spec, with no bare steel at the strut ends
  • Struts and hubs counted against the parts list for each dome
  • Cover and liner seams and zips looked over, with the door and windows fitted
  • The flame test report matched to the cover material used
  • One dome put up at the factory where the order calls for it, and photographs before the container is sealed

Shipping and entry

Several event domes or glamping domes in one container

Request a quote

A container terminal at blue hour, with cranes over the stacked containers

How it gets to you

  • Shipped by sea from South China, several domes to an order, each packed and labelled as its own set
  • The Importer Security Filing goes in before the container is loaded, and a licensed broker files the entry when it lands
  • How many domes fit in a container comes from the factory's packing plan, in writing before you commit
  • Trucked to your site or a warehouse; the crates need a forklift or a dock

Each step of the landing is priced on your domes and set out on the quote. How that works Add up a landed cost

What we do on an order like this

  • We confirm the dome you describe with the factory, and the date, before you commit.
  • We ship welded, hot-dip galvanized steel frames every season, and we have quoted geodesic domes before. A dome's struts and hubs are galvanized after they are cut, drilled and welded.
  • Before you commit, the test paperwork for the cover, the liner and the window material in your order is discussed and agreed with you. We also ask the factory to put in writing the loads the frame was designed for, at your size and tube, so you can set them beside your county's numbers.
  • We check the domes at the factory against the specification you approved, one by one, before they are packed, and we handle the paperwork that lands them.

Questions

Asked about geodesic dome tents

What is a geodesic dome tent?

A dome built from short, straight steel struts joined at hubs into a pattern of triangles, with a fabric cover pulled over the frame. The triangles share the load, so there is no centre pole and the floor stays open. Frequency is how finely the frame is divided: more triangles make a rounder dome. Sellers call the same thing a glamping dome, an event dome or a geodesic dome kit.

What does a glamping dome cost?

Most glamping domes for sale list a price for one dome. We do not publish one, because it depends on your dome: the size, the steel tube, the cover and liner, the doors and windows, how many you order, the ocean freight and the customs entry all move it. Send the spec and the quote gives each of those its own line; the landed cost calculator on this site adds them up.

Are geodesic domes from China any good?

They can be, if the order spells out what good means. The complaints buyers swap online are windows that cloud, a manual for a different dome, and nobody to ask for a spare part. So the window material goes into the spec, the manual and the parts list are checked against the dome before it ships, and each dome has a parts list, so a strut or a cover panel can be ordered by number.

What do you need from me to quote a dome order?

The diameter and frequency you want, or what will go inside so the factory can propose them; the steel tube and finish; the cover, its colour and any clear panels; whether you want a liner; where the door and windows go; what the domes stand on; how many domes and of which sizes; and where they ship and when. The quote form asks for the same things.

Can several domes ship together?

Yes. An order for a site or a fleet is one production run to one spec, and each dome is packed and labelled as its own set, so the fourth dome does not get the seventh one's door. How many fit in a container depends on the size and the crates, so the factory works out a packing plan and you have the count in writing before you commit.

What will the fire marshal ask for?

Under the International Fire Code, as your area adopts it, a fire code official may ask for a lab test report on the cover material to NFPA 701, the fire test for fabrics and films, before a permit is granted. Liners and curtains are materials too. The test paperwork for the exact materials in your order is discussed and agreed with you before you commit. If a factory cannot produce a flame test report on them, we do not go ahead with it, and you hear why.

Do I need an engineer or a building permit?

That is your county's call, and counties differ, so ask before you order. What we can do is have the factory state in writing the loads the frame was designed for, at the size and tube you chose, so you can put them next to your county's numbers. Whether the building department also wants an engineer's stamp is a question for them.

What does a dome stand on?

A timber deck, a concrete slab or the ground, each with its own anchors, so it is a field on the spec sheet. Build the deck or pour the slab to the footprint on the factory's drawing, not to a figure from a listing.

What happens when the domes land in the US?

The Importer Security Filing goes in before the container is loaded in China. When it arrives, a licensed customs broker files the entry, and the container is trucked from the port to your site or a warehouse. We handle that paperwork, and the quote prices each step on its own line.

What do you check before the domes ship?

Each dome's tube and zinc against the spec, its struts and hubs against its parts list, the seams and zips on the cover and liner, the door and windows fitted, and the flame test report against the cover used. Where the order calls for it, one dome goes up at the factory, and you can ask for photographs before the container is sealed.

What are the downsides of a geodesic dome tent?

Condensation forms on the inside of the cover, and a liner and vents are how you deal with it. The curved walls change how furniture fits, so plan the layout before you order. Permits vary from county to county. The windows wear first, which is why their material belongs in the spec.
